Laurent Pelly et Agathe Mélinand / Pel-Mel Groupe
Laurent Pelly is one of France’s most sought-after directors of both theatre and opera, working in the world’s most prestigious houses. He is particularly renowned for his work in French repertoire, and has a skill for revealing the serious side of comedy.
He was Director of the Centre Dramatique National des Alpes in Grenoble 1997–2007 and Director of the Théâtre national de Toulouse with Agathe Mélinand 2008-2017, where his credits include Aristophane’s Les Oiseaux, Ionesco’s La cantatrice chauve, Carlo Gozzi’s L’oiseau vert, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Victor Hugo’s Mille cents francs de récompense.
Pelly opera new works in 2017-18 include Il barbiere di Siviglia for the Théâtre des Champs Elysées and Candide for the Santa Fe Opera, as well as a return to the Metropolitcan Opera with his celebrated production of Massenet’s Cendrillon. Recent work includes Donizetti’s Viva la mamma! (Opéra de Lyon), Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict (Glyndebourne Festival), Offenbach’s Le Roi Carotte (Opéra de Lyon) and Gounod’s Le médecin malgré lui (Grand Théâtre de Genève).
Agathe Mélinand enjoys a successful career as director, dramaturg and librettist, in both opera and the theatre.
From 2008-2018 she was co-director of Théâtre national de Toulouse, where highlights include the conception, writing and direction of Tennessee Williams – Short Stories and Erik Satie – Mémoires d’un amnésique, as well as a vibrant staging of Poulenc’s Babar the Elephant and a new translation for Goldoni’s L’oiseau Vert, which will be transferred to the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin, Paris in Spring 2018. Most recently, in December 2017 she created an adaptation of Marcel Proust Enfance et Adolescence de Jean Santeuil.
Opera highlights include new dialogue versions of Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict,Chabrier’s L’étoile and Donizetti’s La fille du régiment. A specialist in Offenbach, she has created, together with her long-time collaborator Laurent Pelly, new versions of a dozen or so titles including, most recently, Le Roi Carotte for Opéra de Lyon, winner of the Best Rediscovered Work category at the 2016 International Opera Awards. Projects in 2017-18 include a new dialogue adaptation of Strauss’ Gypsy Baron, directed by Christian Räth at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
