Louis Arene et Lionel Lingelser/Munstrum Théâtre
Founded in Alsace in 2012 by Louis Arene and Lionel Lingelser, both graduates of the Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique in Paris, Munstrum Théâtre develops a bold and distinctive theatrical language. Between original creations and contemporary texts, the company stands out for its powerful aesthetic, poetic radicality, and its commitment to exploring urgent social themes.
At the heart of their work lies the body—transformed, unleashed, and made into the living material of a theatrical poem where form and content are inseparable. Munstrum’s creations combine meticulous attention to language and meaning with an ambitious exploration of visual and plastic forms. Music, sculpture, painting, and dance collide on stage, producing a sensory dramaturgy where excess, beauty, strangeness, and laughter all play a vital role.
The mask is a central element of the company’s artistic research. As a dramaturgical tool, it questions identity, the sacred, and death, bringing forth strange and unsettling creatures that break free from social norms to reconnect us with our deeper humanity. This is a theater of cruelty and the uncanny, but also one of joy and laughter—cathartic, surprising, and jubilant.
Surrounding the two artistic directors is a constellation of actors, designers, technicians, and collaborators, all essential to shaping Munstrum’s ambitious aesthetic vision.
Since its founding, the company has created numerous acclaimed productions, including The Dog, the Night and the Knife by Marius von Mayenburg (2016), Clownstrum (2018), 40° Under Zero (2019), The Possessed of Illfurth (2021), and Zypher Z (2021). The company was awarded two Molières in 2023: Best Public Theater Production and Best Direction for 40° Under Zero. More recently, Munstrum has staged Molière’s The Forced Marriage (2022, Comédie-Française) and Makbeth (2025), after Shakespeare.
Munstrum Théâtre receives long-term support from DRAC Grand Est, the Grand Est Region, and the City of Mulhouse.
