Le Mariage forcé
Munstrum Théâtre
by Molière
Masks and staging by Louis Arene
‘I like gambling, visiting, assemblies, entertainments, promenades; in fact, all kinds of pleasure.’ Dorimène declares to the man who has asked for her hand.
The Forced Mariage paints the portrait of a cheeky coquette who is very modern: far from the innocence of Agnès in The Scholl for Wives Dorimène sees her marriage to Sganarelle as the promise of a wealthy life lived in complete independence, especially with the boy she loves. The farce focuses on this elderly man, a naive bourgeois who is taken aback by the libertarian discourse of the woman he thought he dominated, and who hastily and unsuccessfully consults philosophers, gypsies and magicians to be reassured about his wedding, which is to be celebrated that very evening.
A member of the Troupe for four years, Louis Arene left in 2016 to devote himself to his own company, Munstrum Théâtre. A renowned master of masked theatre, he has taken on a Molière farce with a very contemporary feminist slant; The play reverses the usual norms of a patriarchal society by portraying a predatory young bride-to-be who is determined to put an end to male domination. He turns it into an experiment in which the notions of couples and romantic relationships are cruelly but joyfully subverted, giving it a remarkable dreamlike and pictorial dimension.
