Christian Rizzo made his artistic debut in Toulouse, where he formed a rock band and created a clothing brand, before studying visual arts at Villa Arson in Nice and unexpectedly switching to dance.

In the 1990s, he performed and collaborated with numerous contemporary choreographers in Europe, sometimes also creating soundtracks or costumes.

In 1996, he founded l’association fragile and created performances, installations, solo and group pieces, alternating with other commissions for opera, fashion, and the visual arts. Since then, he has created more than forty productions.

Christian Rizzo regularly teaches at art schools in France and abroad, as well as at institutions dedicated to contemporary dance.

In 2003, he received the Syndicat de la Critique’s Revelation of the Year award for “avant un mois je serais revenu...” (Before a month I would have come back…). In 2013, he received the SACD Choreography Award for his entire body of work and in 2014, the Grand Prix danse from the Syndicat de la Critique for “d‘après une histoire vraie” (based on a true story). In July 2014, he was named “Officier des Arts et des Lettres” by the Ministry of Culture and Communication.

In 2016, he won the Ballet Prize—FEDORA—Van Cleef & Arpels for “le syndrome ian” (created in 2016).

In 2020, he once again received the Grand Prix danse du Syndicat de la critique for “une maison.”

From 2015 to 2024, Christian Rizzo directed the National Choreographic Center of Montpellier – Occitanie. Renamed ICI (International Choreographic Institute), he offered a cross-disciplinary vision of creation, training, arts education, and outreach to audiences. Based on practices and territories, the ICI-CCN project was above all a forward-looking space encompassing, in a single movement, the invitation of artists, the writing of choreographic gestures, and the manifestations of their sharing.

Since January 2025, his projects have once again been supported by the l’association fragile, now based in the village of Aspet in the heart of the Comminges region. He is an associate artist at the CND/Centre National de la Danse for 2025 and 2026.

His latest creation, a group piece called, “à l’ombre d’un vaste détail, hors tempête.” (In the shadow of a vast detail, out of the storm), premiered on September 16th and 17th 2025, as part of the Lyon Dance Biennale.

As a choreographer, visual artist, and curator, Christian Rizzo relentlessly pursues elasticity and tension between bodies and space in narratives where fiction emerges from abstraction.

Starting in January 2025, Les Indépendances will take over the administration, production, and distribution of his work.
