Christophe Honoré

Christophe Honoré/Comité Dans Paris

Christophe Honoré started writing as a teenager. After finishing his university studies in Rennes, he juggled several activities at the same time: film critic (for “Les Cahiers de cinéma”), screenwriter, novelist for children and adults, and feature film director, beginning in 2002.

His first film, Seventeen Times Cécile Cassard instantly labeled him as a rising auteur in French cinema. With Ma Mère (2004), Dans Paris (2006), and later Love Songs (2007), The Beautiful Person (2008), Making plans for Lena (2009), Man at Bath (2010), The Beloved (2011) and Métamorphoses (2014), he asserted his desire to make films using a contemporary novelistic approach, while also claiming the right to be inspired by classics such as The Princess of Clèves, which strongly influenced The Beautiful Person. His film Sorry Angel (2018) was selected in the competition for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

His first play as a writer and theatre director, Les Débutantes, was performed at Avignon’s Off Festival in 1998. After The Worst of the Flock (2001) & Beautiful Guys (2004), he returned to Avignon in 2005 to present Dionysos impuissant (Impotent Dionysis) in the In Festival, with Joana Preiss and Louis Garrel playing the leads.
In 2009, he came back to Avignon’s In Festival to stage Victor Hugo’s romantic drama Angelo, Tyrant of Padua. In 2012, his play Nouveau Roman was produced by the Avignon Festival, with the support of la Théâtre national de la Colline in Paris.
In 2015, he wrote Violentes Femmes (Violent Women) for the director Robert Cantarella, and staged Fin de l’Histoire (The End of History), adapted from writings of Witold Gombrowicz, which he presented in France and at the National Theater in Warsaw.

He has also directed multiple operas: Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites (2013), Debussy’s Pelleas and Melisande (2015, at the Opéra de Lyon), Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte (2016, at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence), Verdi’s Don Carlos (2018, at the Opéra de Lyon). He opened the Aix Festival in July 2019 with Puccini’s Tosca.

In 2016, Christophe Honoré created his own theater company Comité Dans Paris in order to manage the production and distribution of his stage creations, in particular Les Idoles (Lausanne, 2018, in partnership with the Théâtre de Vidy). The play toured nationally in 2018 and 2019, and was presented at Odéon – Théâtre de l’Europe, Paris. The piece won multiple prizes, among them the Grand Prize of the French Press Syndicate (Association professionnelle de la critique de théâtre, musique et danse).

In 2020, Christophe Honoré directed an adaptation of Le côté de Guermantes (The Germantes Way) by Marcel Proust at the Comédie-Française (Théâtre Marigny).
In march 2021, he will premiere his new creation “Le Côté de Guermantes” (produced by Comité dans Paris & Théâtre de Vidy), at Odéon – Théâtre de l’Europe, Paris.
