Julie Bertin et Jade Herbulot/Le Birgit Ensemble
Le Birgit Ensemble is a contemporary theater company founded in 2014 by Julie Bertin and Jade Herbulot, following the presentation of their first project, Berliner Mauer: vestiges—a play about the history of the Berlin Wall—in December 2013 at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art. This play was programmed the following season at Théâtre Gérard Philipe, the National Drama Center in Saint-Denis.
In July 2015, they staged an outdoor version of Pour un Prélude, their second project, exploring the transition to the year 2000. This piece was later recreated indoors at Théâtre de Vanves in October 2015.
In July 2017, they presented Memories of Sarajevo and Dans les ruines d’Athènes at the 71st Festival d’Avignon. Together with their previous works, these pieces form a tetralogy on the transition from the 20th to the 21st century, titled Europe, mon amour, completed with a musical form, Cabaret Europe.
Starting in 2018, they began a new writing cycle focused on the history of the French Fifth Republic. As part of this, they presented Entrée libre (l’Odéon est ouvert) at the CNSAD in April 2018 and premiered Les Oubliés. Alger-Paris. in January 2019 at Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier of the Comédie-Française. The third installment, Roman(s) national, was created in 2021, accompanied by Douce France, a classroom monologue for a single performer, and Birgit Kabarett, a political cabaret that adapts to each event and current political or social issue. The sixth installment will debut in December 2024.
Les Suppliques will follow, premiering in November 2023 and touring during the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 seasons. This text is a winner of the ARTCENA grant for the creation of dramatic texts (2023).
The same year also saw the creation of Les vies de Léon, designed as an immersive sound installation adressed for younger audiences.
Finally, Le Scarabée et l’océan, a play written by Leïla Anis for pre-teens, premiered at Théâtre Gérard Philipe – National Drama Center (CDN) in Saint-Denis, in April 2025.
Julie Bertin and Jade Herbulot are associate artists at Théâtre Gérard Philipe – National Drama Center (CDN) in Saint-Denis and at La Passerelle – the national theater of Gap.
The Birgit Ensemble is funded by DRAC Île-de-France and by the Val-de-Marne Departmental Council.
